She is the driving force behind SkillFocus, taking SkillFocus from an unknown entity in 1997 to an international training service provider across 35 countries in 5 continents today.
Shanta is the founder and principal consultant of SkillFocus Consultancy Malaysia and currently an international management consultant and trainer for the public and private sectors as well as for international and civil society organisations. She obtained her M.Sc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics & Political Science, B. Economics (Hons) from the University of Malaya and her Diploma in Public Administration from the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) Malaysia. She is a trainer certified in International Training Methodology and also in Curriculum Design. Shanta was also a Hubert Humphrey Fellow at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in the United States and a Fulbright Scholar at the American Studies Research Centre in India and has also participated in the Basic and Advanced Negotiations Workshops at the Harvard Law School.
Shanta began her career as a lecturer in a higher institution of learning, where she was awarded the Lecturer of the Year. She then served as an Administrative & Diplomatic officer with the Malaysian government in the Ministries of Finance, Information and then in the Prime Minister’s Department specifically the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN) & the Institute of Diplomacy & Foreign Relations (IDFR). Appointed as a member of a special task force for the setting up of the IDFR Malaysia she made several recommendations for diplomatic training. While serving in Government, has been actively involved in extensive budget negotiations for operating departments in Malaysia. Shanta has also represented the Malaysian government and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) extensively, in various international consultations, dialogues with partners, including numerous other bilateral, regional and multilateral meetings. In 1997, she decided to start her independent consultancy practice.
Shanta’s main specialisations are Negotiations, Leadership, Conflict Management, Facilitation Skills, Service Delivery, Presentation Skills, Communications Skills, Women’s Empowerment and Cross-Cultural Competence. Shanta is a lead resource person and facilitator for several international organizations including among others, the European Union, the Commonwealth Secretariat, UNDP, UNITAR, the Colombo Plan and the Institute of International Education (USA) and for several governments. This includes leading training interventions for capacity-building in Negotiations, Leadership, Women’s Empowerment and Interpersonal Skills in several countries. These trainings have been held in 30 countries, including among others, the United States of America, Cyprus, China, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Mauritius, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, the Gambia and Jamaica.
Shanta is a proficient bi-lingual trainer (English and Bahasa Malaysia), uses highly interactive methodology and is very adaptable in a cross-cultural training environment. In international workshops both in Malaysia & in other countries, she has trained the corporate and public sector personnel of different levels, from more than 100 countries. Her interests include writing, reading, travel, culinary arts and empowering youth.
